8K TV Resolution Explained:
if you’re thinking of upgrading to an 8K TV it helps to know a little bit about how resolution works and whether it is worth the upgrade.
The first thing you should look at is what the resolution means on a TV. Very simply, when we are talking about the resolution, we are talking about the number of pixels on the TV screen.
Therefore, when you are looking at older TV sets and they give you values of 720p, you will be looking at around 1 million pixels for that TV set.
If you have a more modern TV such as a 4K TV, you will be looking at around 8 million pixels on the screen.
When we’re talking about 8K TVs the resolution and the number of pixels that you will get on the screen is closer to 33 million!
In fact, an 8K TV will give you 7680×4320 pixels with the first value being the horizontal pixels and the second value being the vertical pixels.
Should You Upgrade To 8K?
The way to look at whether you should upgrade to 8K, is to think that recently 4K became the industry standard for TV sets. Sure, you might still have a 1080p HD screen but if you go to buy new TV you will quite commonly see 4K TV’s going quite cheaply and that is the new industry standard.
The next stage is 8K which is new at the time of writing, however it will eventually become the industry standard. As a prediction, we think it will become very widespread during 2020 and a couple of years after that will probably be the norm!
If you get an 8K TV now it will cost a lot more, but this was the same as with 4K TVs if you wanted to be one of the first to experience the higher resolution.
There are also some TV sets that were available in the 8K resolution and these will start off around $2000+ at the time of writing.
The easiest way to think of the resolution with 8K and what you will be getting as well as the picture quality is to think that an 8K TV will quadruple the resolution that you get with a 4K TV. So, if you currently have a 4K TV and you like the picture quality as well as wanting the absolute best you cannot do better than getting an 8K TV and it will make the picture four times sharper than it is on the 4K TV.
Another way of looking at it is that an 8K TV will give you twice as many pixels horizontally and twice as many pixels vertically.
The other thing to bear in mind if you’re looking at upgrading is that most of the 8K TVs will give you a large screen size of over 60 inches.
This is because with a resolution as detailed as this you will need a bigger screen to be able to view all the details. You could fit all the pixels on a smaller screen, but it wouldn’t make much difference in the picture quality.
So, the reason for this is to give you some real depth when you are viewing a movie or sports in 8K resolution.
Is It Better?
To answer the question “Is 8K Better Than 4K?”
This will depend on your current setup as well as the screen size and how far you are sitting away from the screen. It gets very complicated to explain but because of the number of pixels and data screen will hold you will want to be able to view the depth on a larger screen and ideally sit a bit further away.
Therefore, the screen sizes are larger with an 8K TV.
Even if you have a 4K TV and a standard high definition TV if you were to sit very close to either one you will probably not be able to see much of the difference.
It is only when you sit further away that you can view the colour depth and see the TV in full glory.
That said, as more content becomes available in 8K you will be one of the first people to be able to view this on an 8K TV set.
The other thing to bear in mind is because of the data required you will need a new HDMI 2.1 cable to be able to view an 8K TV.
If you’re worried about being able to watch content that is in 8K resolution bear in mind that a lot of these TVs will include an upscaling feature for content that is currently not in 8K resolution.
As it becomes more widespread will be able to view in 8K.
Verdict:
8K is not a gimmick and it is here to stay and eventually will become the new industry standard. However, the way to work out whether you should make the upgrade is purely on price at this point.
